The heroic events of the Poltava battle are immortalized in architecture of the city. Such a historical zest is the center of Poltava city.
An attentive traveler will surely notice that Round Square ensemble with the monument of Glory is the modest duplicate of Palace Square with Alexandrine column of Monferrana in Saint Petersburg.
However, instead of the monotonous Petersburg roadway around the monument, in Poltava there is a
wonderful park which abounds with greenery.
But, anyway, you are not mistaken. Indeed, this unique world-known ensemble was built by the best architects as “small Petersburg” in honour of 100 anniversary of Poltava battle. The historians assert that nearby the place, where this monument stands, in 1709 the meeting of Peter I with the defenders of Poltava took place.
Prince Alexey Kurakin, the first Malorossiya governor-general, became the initiator of Glory monument building. Later, by order of the emperor Nikolay II, a beautiful park was founded around the monument, which grew into the unique Korpusnyi park, and which is presently a favorite place for rest of Poltava citizens and guests.
From park center, where the monument of Glory towers above nobly, wide park avenues disperse radially and fluently pass into the streets.
